In this unplugged activity, we'll make a quick data set of objects. Then, using those objects and our imagination we will think about what makes something look like a face. Let's get to it.

Steps

1. Object Hunt

Find ten small objects in five minutes. They can be junk objects or personally meaningful. Be creative and find unique items!

These are some examples of different items we found in our space within the time limit.

Objects from my desk
Objects from my messy drawer
Objects from the garden

2. Find Faces Within the Objects

Gather your objects and spread them on a flat surface so that you can see them well. Try to pay attention to their shapes more than their colours, textures or patterns and spend 5 to 10 minutes arranging them into a face.

More Faces and Expressions

  • Can you create different faces using the same objects?

  • Can you change the expression within the faces you created?

  • What adjectives would you use to describe your creations? Dreamy, Happy, Dizzy, Sleepy?

  • As you arrange and find different faces, try drawing each expression or face to keep a record of your creations.

  • Name your creations.
